Five Layers Under

Five years unfold.
I see more to trust and enjoy!
FIRST There was the black aura which led to mystery.
SECOND There was the music which played on guitar, ukulele, and keyboard.
THIRD There was the careful scheduling which brought your wife’s frenzies to rest.
FOURTH There was the concentrated listening which made every in-law and relative feel valued, appreciated and known.
FIFTH There were your parents who bring simplicity and order to all of us.
They elevate the details to tributes of love and esteem.
They designate cat fur exotic, the cat hospice the Taj Ma-hal
Insects become et-cet-er-as!
BRING THEM ON, ALL THE TINY MINISCULE DOLLS. I’m listening

My iPhone camera saw loyalty.
I saw trust.
Eileen saw her best friend.
Richard saw her calm.
What did Don see?

Richard’s iPhone saw red.
I saw outside the window.
Don saw his iPhone.
Eileen saw opposite glances.
Richard saw our patience.

What do you see?

Miriam of Nazareth: Maiden to Mother

Miriam of Nazareth

According to Luke 2:1&7, a census was ordered for Joseph’s royal line, to be taken in Bethlehem.
There, Miriam wrapped the child in a blanket and laid him in a manger because there was no room for them at the village inn.

Matthew 2:1 tells us Bethlehem was in Judea and the birth took place during the reign of King Herod.

Miriam inhales the bovine breaths, moisture’s milk
As sheep blink lustrous eyes and bleat;
Surround the manger’s golden straw
The rustling and the moans converge to heat.

As sheep blink lustrous eyes and bleat:
“His name is Jesus, Master, Holy One, the Promised”
The shepherds, angels, kings, they bow and kiss.

Surround the manger’s golden straw:
Aura of food for animal and men: Bread of Life.
He’s cradled, swaddled, tight by Joseph’s wife.

The rustling and the moans converge to heat
What foreign forces drop in stable’s arms:
The afterbirth a covenant: protect from harm!

Miriam gave birth in a foreign land without family to assist. The maiden birthed in pain and pondered the secrets revealed by Shepherds, angels and Kings.
Later, Simeon would proclaim: (Luke2:35)
This child will be the greatest joy of many. The deepest thoughts of many hearts will be revealed. The new mother pondered.
John foretells:(John 1:13)
Al those who believe, trust and receive him will be reborn from the will of God. Miriam pondered.
Luke 2:19 finishes:
Miriam quietly treasured these things in her heart and often thought about them. Mother to us now, we who believe, place our trust in her.

The Language of Affection

Owen, my son
Of 36 years
Used to sit on my lap
(for only a second)
When he was twenty.
Safe and home –
Counting on me.

Years later, he
Carried his father
Frail from mesothelioma
(whenever necessary)

Yesterday
He advised me
That his 3 year old daughter
Annika
Would be very upset
If I thought she ate all the chocolates,
Without permission.

She was reassured
Listening to Poppa tell me
Her feelings if I thought her sneaky.

Then today
After enjoying one chocolate,
She deposited the wrapping in my hand.
Evidence that all
Was understood:
The trust-
The certainty-
The affection-

The attention to details!

Trust

Trust comes in tiny bites,
samples
savored by the tongue.

Not too hot
or bitter;
cloying
or ephemeral.

Trusts can be
legal puzzles
biting at your gut…
bleeding through.

Or confidences,
ennobling and
intimate.

But to last,
trust needs to enter
on tip-toe.
“til you know
it flows
whole –
enriching you
as it goes.

Welcome trust.
It is the strength in wishing,
the bend in believing,
the breath in loving!

A Living treasure!
