New post on Children’s Author David L. Harrison’s Blog

Update from Jeanne Poland
by davidlharrison
Hi everyone,
I asked for updates on writing experiences from anyone who has attended previous poetry workshops. One of the original SWAP 8+1 members, Jeanne Poland, was the first to respond. I am not surprised. Jeanne is always prompt and I relied on her to keep me on schedule at the workshops she attended. She is a former nun, retired teacher, gifted artist, and dedicated poet. Here are her own words. Thanks Jeanne!

1 David introduced me to a blog on WordPress, and to daily posting.
I was able to purchase media space and post high-res photos, films, links and marvelous graphics which satisfy my appetite
for illustrations.

2 The replies and comments on various poetry blogs enrich my days immeasurably.

3 Highlights Foundation is my new Writing, Illustrating and Publishing Academy.
The artists are a dignified social circle too.

4 Blurb, an independent author/publishing firm, has guided me in the publication of 13 books.
You can see previews of them for free at:

5 Working on-line has saved me much travel time, and linked me to the global world of art.

6 I continue to be stimulated by the networking with “live poets in live time” and the art shows held at the galleries here in NY.

7 Finally, my days are sprinkled with the joys of the 3 and 5 year old grand children, who also love to rhyme and initiate great art:

Genuine First Reaction

I just got home from detox in the Berkshires. Two days without the internet. Slept better! Rested! Communication more lucid! No deadlines!
Here is what I noticed!

Oliver's Genuine Golden Tones

Oliver’s Genuine Golden Tones

Blurb welcomed me home with these details on how to write for children:
In the words of Kurt Vonnegut: “Be a sadist. No matter how sweet and innocent your leading characters, make awful things happen to them—in order that the reader may see what they are made of.”
Vulnerability inspires sympathy in a reader, and is an effective way of generating interest in a protagonist. But it’s even better when a character begins to learn from those situations, becoming stronger and less helpless.

Children and adolescents are naturally fluid; they grow both literally and figuratively from month to month.
Children are always experiencing situations for the first time—their reactions will likely be clumsy, unpolished, and very genuine.
everything really does seem larger when you’re very young.
Kids can be great characters because they’re a bit awkward. There’s nothing like a lost kid to stimulate empathy with a reader.
For example, fourteen-year-old June loves to secretly dress in boots her uncle bought at a Renaissance fair and an old play costume before going out to the woods and pretending she’s in the Middle Ages. June’s an unpopular kid, an oddball.and her eccentricities highlight one of the best parts of being a kid—the ability to be yourself before anyone tells you it’s wrong.
The best children’s books have stories and characters that are relatable and visually memorable.

Poetry Reading July18, 2013

We enjoyed our Poetry Reading, singing and view of Jeanne’s family of self-published e-books.
Several artists learned how to publish on Blurb.com.

Quenby Poland’s photos in the books and frames were
admired.

Even Oliver and Annika , at 2 and 4 years of age participated.

Who knew Columbia Greene College could
welcome all ages to their halls to celebrate life, love and fine art without a wrinkle in time?

My Marketing Vision

PaintingsandPoems

My fellow poet,Joy Acey, wants to know more about my Marketing Vision.
All my former books have been for “children of all ages“.
The next one, “Riddles”, will be for parents and pre-schoolers to read together.
My Blurb books were created to be free Galleries for friends and family on line. (Turn the page with the curser.)
Several editors have said that they are not written for children. (but sometimes about children)
So I have begun editing my 30 odd riddles, looking for single syllable words and straight-forward photos.
Amy VanDerwater’s book – Forest Has a Song – inspires me with its classic spacing.
So that lay-out is my design vision; the color themes will evolve; and the lovers of the book resonate.
(Like many fresh flowers in water at the farmer’s market.)
